Invisalign ® vs. Traditional Braces – What’s Best for You?

Let’s face it, when it comes to your smile, you want it to be beautiful. While we normally think of braces as a way to straighten crooked teeth, there are conditions that can be treated by braces, including overbites, speech impediments, problems with chewing or eating, and even sleep apnea just to name a few. But when it comes to the choice between traditional braces and newer treatments such as Invisalign, how do you choose?

Here are a few things to consider:

Total treatment time: Believe it or not, going the Invisalign route may take less time than traditional braces. Typically, braces are worn 24/7 (obviously, since they are glued to your teeth) for about 2 years. Invisalign, on the other hand, is worn between 22 and 24 hours a day, but only for 6-18 months.

Maintenance: Maintaining your braces may be a little more difficult, especially when you consider that you may get food caught in the wiring. Invisalign comes with a cleaning system, or you can clean your trays in lukewarm water.

Follow-up visits: Both braces and Invisalign require visits to the dentist every month or so. Keep in mind, too, that with Invisalign, you will need to change the aligner trays every 2 weeks

Both also have their pros and cons, which can make the decision a matter of preference. For instance, are you disciplined enough to take out the Invisalign trays when you eat and drink? Can you avoid the temptation of leaving your Invisalign trays out when you don’t feel like wearing them? Are you concerned about food getting caught in your braces, having difficulty eating. Does just the thought of those wires make you uncomfortable?

Though there are some good reasons that favor one solution over the other, the best thing to do is talk through these options with your dentist or orthodontist. They are the experts and will steer you in the right direction.
